Data hygiene, point-in-time data & leakage prevention

The leakage paths that silently inflate a backtest — look-ahead, survivorship, revisions — and the checklists that close each one, in crypto and in equities.

In this module

  1. Why data is the first place strategies die
  2. Look-ahead bias — the classic killer
  3. Survivorship bias
  4. Point-in-time data — the gold standard
  5. Common leakage sources by data type
  6. Practical detection and prevention checklist
  7. The shift test — a quick reality check
  8. Where infrastructure helps (and where it does not)
  9. Key takeaways
Practice

Run the shift test on one signal

Take a signal you already have, or define a simple one in Edge Lab. Shift it forward by one bar and compare. If the curve barely moves, the original almost certainly contained the future. Write down every leakage source you find on the way — that list is worth more than the result.
